Ding dong

Had a blast animating Guru Studio's holiday card this year. Switching from confusing After Effects comps with millions of layers to just drawing stick men for a change was a holiday itself. Merry Christmas!

Comic jamming

So I've surgically removed this blog from matthammill.com and set it up here. I'm hoping this'll make me feel more free to post random crappy stuff, now that it's not quite so tied to my main officially official portfolio.

And what better way to kick off random crappy stuff than comic jams? I drew these ones last week, trading panels with Jamie Tucker and Emily Tu. Jams are fun and I tell myself that they're good practice for storytelling and staging even when they crash and burn (as is usually the case) cause you're always on your toes with a time limit and no eraser.

Nuit Blanche was awesome

The Arcadian Renaissance at Nuit Blanche was awesome, and well worth the slog through crowded drunken Toronto (and not just because my game was in it!). If you couldn't be there, check out the video. The Hand Eye Society has been on quite a roll this year.

Gesundheit! at Nuit Blanche

Just got back in Toronto and I'm still adjusting, but happily I made it in time for next weekend's Nuit Blanche. I'm particularly excited this year, as the new Gesundheit! is going to be playable at the Arcadian Renaissance exhibit—a free all-night arcade featuring six vintage machines retrofitted by the Hand Eye Society to run new games from Toronto's indie developers. Can't wait to see how all this plays with the Nuit Blanche crowd! (And there's also going to be a midnight Nidhogg tourney!)

I found a book

I was in the Brick Lane market the other weekend and came across this book Creative Computer Graphics by Jankel and Morton, 1984. There's some really interesting stuff in here, beyond just the "haha retro" kind of interesting (which is here too). And I love how it's all photographs of CTR displays instead of just, you know, PrntScrn.

Back in London

So Europe's pretty cool. Museums, mountains, bonfires, buttresses, baby coots, bike polo and Pictoplasma—eye opening to say the least! And turns out castles really do exist after all. Funny being in buildings five times older than Canada.

And now after a few months on the road (or rather train tracks) I'm back in London for the time being, working on some fun stuff that I'll hopefully be able to post soon. Still being a tourist when I can, though, and watching soccer football for the first time in my life.

A few sketches from the trip:

On a plane

Well, I'm off to London for a little while, followed by some other places in Europe. I'm pretty excited. I want to see an old building. I don't know if I'll be able to post to this site, but maybe I can do twitter. We'll see!

JibJab vid online

I made a little eCard animation over at JibJab (it's the one at the top left called Birthday Bunnies) which was pretty fun to do, doodling rabbits and stuff. Everybody should send it to all their friends in honour of the late great James Doohan's birthday today!

Sir Reginald shots

Finally posted some better shots of Sir Reginald's Logbook. Thanks Emily! I also was cleaning up my drive and found a bit of old development artwork for Gesundheit! that I posted.

Europe

I'm packing now for a big trip to Europe, and I'm trying to learn French watching the French versions of Pixar movies. Ratatouille's a good one for that because the words rat, chef, restaurant and ratatouille are all the same and understanding them makes me feel smart.

Anyway, I'm going to be gone for a little while but hopefully I will learn and draw and be productive and not just talk on Skype the whole time!

Still more sketchbooks

Just posted some pages from another couple sketchbooks, which pretty much brings me up to date there.

Working on Gesundheit!...

I've been working on the Gesundheit! game a bunch lately. It's been dragging on for too long. I gotta get it done! And whenever I get back into it I remember just how satisfying it is to script something and have it actually start working...

screen_new_small

The danger is when I go too long without getting other people to try it, and I end up designing levels for someone who's clocked a million hours on it (me) instead of normal mortals!

More sketchbooks

A couple more sketchbooks added. I've been animating for Gesundheit! a lot lately... when I'm not playing lovely, lovely Ico.
